5 ways to protect your home from winter storms

Geofencing alone can get it wrong – turn the lights off when someone’s home. With presence determined by phone location, Home & Away Routines can automatically turn your Nest cameras and doorbells on and off. You can automate home devices and take care of everyday tasks with Home & Away Routines in the Google Home app. For example, you can set up an Away Routine so that your lights turn off automatically after you leave home. If you use Nest devices and services, this feature is only available if you use them with a Google Account.

The new history feed is the closest we’ve gotten to a meaningful improvement, and even that doesn’t solve actual complaints. As I’m writing this post, I can’t view footage from 6am from my Nest Camera with Floodlight without spending five minutes scrolling back and forth to get it to finally load, but I can easily from my older Nest Hello doorbell camera. They’re both connected to power, and both on the same Nest Aware plan with 24/7 recording. The only difference is the Home app’s terrible handling of recording history.

For example, it can turn on your Nest Cam to help you keep an eye on things when you leave home, and turn it off when you’re home and don’t need it. As we went into detail with in our original Google Nest Cam review, the Home app still feels disorganized and less-than-predictable when it comes to various settings and options for these cameras. When the next screen appears, drag the map to move the pin on top of your house. You can tap on the mountain icon in the bottom-right corner to get an overhead satellite view. The biggest difference, though, is that Auto-Away is exclusive to the Nest Thermostat, while Home/Away Assist is available on all of Nest’s products .

So now the whole family can control the Nest Thermostat, get notifications from Nest Protect, see what’s happening at home with Nest Cam, and get their own copy of the monthly Home Report. Furthermore, if you have an erratic schedule and don’t leave and come home at the same times every day, it might be best to have GPS enabled so that the motion sensor doesn’t get overly confused. Or if the temperature reaches 80 degrees inside in the summer, but you don’t want it to get any hotter, you can set this as the maximum temperature. The next step is to enable Auto-Away, which uses the Nest Thermostat’s built-in motion sensor to determine if you’re home or away.

Your Nest will enter Auto-Away within 10 minutes of your phone leaving the area considered your home. You’ll need to use the Home app to set up Home & Away Routines. Select the devices you want to use to determine if someone's home. You can turn Auto-Lock on for Home, Away, or both. You can also choose how long your lock will wait before re-locking itself.

Tips to protect your home this winter

You share it with others – your spouse, roommates, parents. Once you get in the habit of having GPS keeper on all the time, disable notifications to clear up the notification bar in Android. You must start GPS keeper every time you restart your phone to achieve the desired effects. Craig Lloyd is a smarthome expert with nearly ten years of professional writing experience. Google Pixel Watch Ben's smartwatch of choice with his phone is the Google Pixel Watch. Starting with the real root cause of all of these frustrations, the Google Home app remains a mess for Nest users. The experience is clearly what Google wants to use going forward, but it pales in comparison to what the Google Nest built up over several years.

When you start a Routine with a voice command, it won't change the state of Nest Guard. Open the Google Home app at the top of the home view screen, tap the Home or Away toggle. If you find “No participating products,” it’s because you don’t have any of the products listed above.

Home/Away Assist uses learning algorithms and activity sensors built into Nest products – the same things the Nest Learning Thermostat has been using for four years to help save energy. And Home/Away Assist also uses your phone’s location to do an even better job of telling if anyone’s home. Scrolling through 24/7 recording on the new Google Nest cameras, quite frankly, sucks. It’s slow to load, and breaks 80% of the time. If you scroll through more than a couple of hours of footage, the Home app’s feed inevitably breaks, showing either a blank screen or an error message.

About Home & Away Routines

The Google Home app is supposed to replace the Nest app, but the transition period has been a maddening limbo. Nearly a year later, virtually nothing has changed on that front either. We’ve wanted to do Home/Away Assist for a long time now. But more importantly, we wanted to do it right.
